Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Toms River, NJ
What is IFS Therapy?
IFS therapy, or “Internal Family Systems” therapy, is an evidence-based approach to psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz.
With this approach, we take a different perspective on the mind in that it is comprised of various sub-personalities or “parts,” each with special roles, emotions, and viewpoints. These parts can include inner critics, protectors, exiles, and many others—each one developed to assist us in navigating life’s ups and downs.
The Self, or your core, compassionate, confident, and whole person, is at the heart of this internal landscape. IFS therapy strives to guide individuals in understanding and harmonizing their inner parts while being led by the Self to foster healing and a sense of wholeness.
How Does IFS Therapy Work?
With IFS therapy, we work with our clients to build trusting relationships with their internal “parts” by exploring each part’s intentions and concerns in a safe environment.
Instead of trying to suppress unwanted feelings or behaviors, IFS explores all parts with curiosity and compassion while healing wounded parts and creating harmony among the discord between subpersonalities and the self.
An IFS-trained therapist will guide you through this internal dialogue where you’ll learn to unburden the pain held by vulnerable parts and help protective parts relax. Over time, this leads to greater emotional resilience, self-understanding, and lasting inner peace. We utilize various tools, including visualization techniques and relaxation exercises, to achieve this. Our therapists will work with you to develop the most effective tools.
